A word used to show the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence is called PREPOSITION.
Example: I know about him.
1. PLACE/POSITION:
At, about, above, across, against, among, before, behind, below, in, inside, near, of, on, over, with, under, upon, within.
Example: At the window, Sitting by the man.
2. TIME:
At, after, before, by, during, from, for, in, on, since, till, until, within, throughout.
Example: At 10 am, Before the 15th July.
3. DIRECTION/MOVEMENT:
At, away, from, across, down, for into, off, over, out of, round, to, towards, up.
Example: Away from BD, Start for England.
4. AGENCY/INSTRUMENT:
At, by, with, though, from.
Example: At auction, By an accident.
5. REASON/PURPOSE:
For, from, of, though, to, with.
Example: Died for the country, Suffering from cold.
6. POSSESSION:
Of, with.
Example: The book of Jhon, The girl with blue eyes.
7. Relationship:
With
Example: I live with my parents.
8. STANDARD/RATE/VALUE/SPEED:
At, by.
Example: Bank charges interest rate at 9%, Cloth is sold by the meter.
This preposition words use mostly on sentences:
AT= PLACE/POSITION, TIME, DIRECTION/MOVEMENT, AGENCY/INSTRUMENT, STANDARD/RATE/VALUE/SPEED.
OF= PLACE/POSITION, REASON/PURPOSE, POSSESSION
IN/ON= PLACE/POSITION, TIME
BY= TIME, AGENCY/INSTRUMENT
WITH= PLACE/POSITION, AGENCY/INSTRUMENT, REASON/PURPOSE, POSSESSION, RELATIONSHIP
